Frequently asked questions

How long does a metal roof actually last?
Properly installed standing-seam metal regularly hits 50+ years of service life. Tuff-Rib exposed-fastener systems can run 30–40 years depending on environment and maintenance. Both significantly outlast asphalt.
Does a metal roof make the house louder in rain?
Not noticeably. Metal panels sit on solid decking with underlayment between them and the structure — the air gap that would amplify sound is not there. People often expect more noise than they actually get.
Can I install metal over my old shingles?
Some jurisdictions allow it but we do not recommend it. Old shingles trap heat, hide existing decking damage, and add weight. We tear off and start with a clean deck so the new roof is doing its full job.
What about lightning?
Common myth — metal roofs do not attract lightning any more than other roofing. They are also non-combustible, so if the house is struck the roof is far less likely to ignite than asphalt or wood shake.
